Is pleasure the highest good

Is the best life the one with the most calm pleasure and the least pain, or is there something higher, such as duty, honour or virtue? Hedonists say pleasure is the only thing good in itself. Critics say other things matter too.

What it is

Nearly everyone wants to feel good and avoid pain. Hedonism makes a stronger claim: that pleasure is the only thing that is good for its own sake, and pain the only thing that is bad. Everything else, from money to friendship to knowledge, is worth having only because of the pleasure it brings or the pain it prevents. The opposing view says that some things matter in themselves, whether or not they feel good.

The word hedonism suggests parties and indulgence, but that is not what the main thinkers had in mind. The question is about what makes a life go well, not about whether to eat cake.

The main views

  • Pleasure is the only good. Only pleasure has value in itself, and only pain lacks it. The ancient thinker Epicurus held a version of this in which the pleasure sought is mostly calm: the absence of pain and disturbance, not wild excitement.
  • Amount or quality. Jeremy Bentham thought only the amount of pleasure counts. John Stuart Mill held that the kind matters too, and that the pleasures of the mind are higher than bodily ones.
  • Something higher. Others hold that things like friendship, achievement, knowledge, virtue and a meaningful life are worth having in their own right, and some are worth more than any pleasure.

An example

Imagine a machine that could give you perfect, lasting pleasant experiences, indistinguishable from real life, for the rest of your days. You would never know it was a machine. Would you plug in? Most people say no. If pleasure were the only thing that mattered, there would be no reason to refuse. The fact that so many do suggests that being in contact with reality, and actually doing and being something, also matters. Hedonists reply that this reaction may be a matter of habit, not wisdom.

Why people still disagree

  • Other things seem to count. Friendship, achievement and truth seem valuable even when they bring no pleasure, and some of them seem worth more than a lot of pleasure.
  • Not every pleasure is good. The pleasure of cruelty, or pleasure based on a false belief, does not seem good in the same way.
  • What is pleasure? The word covers very different experiences, from a warm bath to solving a problem, and it is hard to give one clear account of what they share.
