Does meaning need something beyond this world

Is everything that matters found inside this world, or does it point to something beyond it? Some say meaning needs God or a life after death. Others say a meaningful life is possible in this world alone.

What it is

Most people agree that a life can contain meaning: love, work, children, a cause. The disagreement is about whether that is all there is to meaning, or whether it needs a foundation beyond this world. Some hold that without God, or a soul that outlasts death, all of it is in the end empty. Others hold that meaning is as real as the people and projects it is found in, and needs nothing else.

The question is sometimes called the question of transcendence: whether what matters ultimately reaches past what we can see and touch.

The main views

  • Supernaturalism. God, or a soul that survives death, is needed for life to have meaning. The extreme form says that without them nothing is meaningful. The moderate form says smaller meanings are possible, but ultimate meaning needs them.
  • Naturalism. The physical world alone is enough for a meaningful life. The moderate form allows that a spiritual realm could add to meaning. A stronger form says that God or an everlasting soul would in fact take meaning away.

An example

Think of someone who spends years caring for a dying parent. A supernaturalist might say that this act matters ultimately because it is seen by God, or because it leaves a trace in a life that goes on. A naturalist says that it matters because of what it is: love, and the difference it makes to that parent now. Does it matter less, or not at all, if everything fades in the end? Or does the fact that it ends make it matter more?

Why people still disagree

  • The pull of the ending. If everything comes to nothing, it can seem that nothing was worth doing. The wide emptiness of the universe can add to the feeling. Those who hold that meaning needs a beyond often start here.
  • The naturalist reply. A life does not have to last forever to matter now, and a person's own meaning does not need to be meaning for the whole universe.
  • Eternity has problems too. Some argue that endless life would bring boredom and would take away the urgency that gives choices their weight.
  • Meaning without God. Many point to people whose lives seem rich in meaning without belief in God or a soul.
